INTEL P4 550 / 3,4 GHz and
INTEL Mainboard D915PGN

Destination:
It is our aim to first build this system with original fans the check the systems noise and power. Then we will optimze the system step by step until we get a complete silent no noise PC. We will optimize the
system in several steps so every reader can copy it in relation to his needs and budget.

Informations:
Like always you can click the picture to get a full size view. Above you can see the test system with original intel boxed cooler and MSI RX600XT graphic card. Below shows the Socket 775 CPU. Intresting to know is that it has no pins
anymore , only contacts. the bending of the pins isn´t possible anymore. We also experienced often that after trying to remove the cooler the cpu sticked to the heatsink , and we teared it out of the socket. This shouldn´t happen anymore
with the socket 775.
I/O and Power:
Below you can see the I/O connectors which included a 10/100 Ethernet and 4x USB 2.0. 4 Additional USB Connector are on the Mainboard. If use PSU with a 20 pol ATX plug , you need to connect the 2 additional
power connectors (P4 4pol and 4pin Molex). If a newer 24 pol ATX plug is available , the 4 pin molex connector isn´t requiered anymore.
PCI Express/SATA /Front:
Next to the 16x PCI Express slot you can find two additional PCI-E 1x on the board. The Frontconnector for Power switch ect are colored. Next to them are the 4 additional USB 2.0 and above the 4 SATA
connectors.
Some DVD-Drives with SATA are on the market , and because of that all of those connectors are a nice thing.
The testsystem:
The mercury Airdesign case has a good air circulation , but it is noticable if no case fan is working. Also the fanless Yesico PSU raised the case temperatures. The loud Samsung SATA 1604 is definetly to loud and should be in a HD Box
for cutting down the noise and elimating the vibration. The MSI Graphic card with its fan stays in the background and it way more quiet than the Intel Boxed cooler.
Next steps:
Before we free this system from any noise by building it in a heatpipe case , we try to reduce the noise with a cheaper method , which is indeed more intresting for most of the users. Therefor the knowledge is
valueble from previous test systems. The first thing would a a very silent fan PSU to create additional air circulation in the the case , but won´t use an extra case fan. The original Boexed cooler from intel will be replaced by a Silent
fan. The Harddrive has to to go in a low noise HD box. The MSI Graphicard was not really noticable , because all the other components created more noise.
here we will see later if a fanless solution is possible.

Installation:
The installing went like decribed in the previous testsystem, however the Arctic cooling CPU cooler were much easier to mount then the Intel cooler. The Freezer 7 worked with 300-2500 rpm is with its 1,2
sone is very quiet in comparing to the 4,9 sone of the Intel one.
Foreword:
Finally we got an Intel system again. Complete Tests and comparing are easy to find on specialzed websites , and because of that we are testing this combination out of a low noise perspective.
The Intel P4 550 CPU fits without questions in the upper class line together with its heat producing.
But it is also clear that it is possible to cool this 105 watts CPU passive and noise less with heatpipes. The optimal heatpipe
system we are about to find in a seperate test with the 2 heatpipe case deltatronic and silentmaxx. But this test is still pending because the we are still waiting for the socket 775 adaptor from the company silentmaxx. When its out ,
we´ll test it straight. Deltatronic is releasing this adaptor on the next cebit.
But of course we don´t wait that long and test this system with standart components and continue modifieng the system until its noiseless. We will build various configurations with fan and fanless PSUs , case in Airdesign with and
without case fans and also with a brandnew silent cpu cooler.
Like always in the the foreground stands a PC with minimum noise and maximum stable performance but no overclocked system.
Installation:
The mainboard is construction simple and easy to work with , together with the pictured manual nobody should have problems with it. The box includes next to the manuals and informations all necessary cables and a
driver cd
to connect the PSU this board has 3 power connectors. the enhanced 24 pol atx connector , the 4pol 12v and the 5v molex plug
The original intel cooler in our case was very difficult to mount. Anyway for changing the cooler the board should be out of the case.
Power on:
Right after switching the BIOS Hardwaremonitor showed 56°C at the cpu with 2252 rpm fanspeed. The noise is still aceptable wich unfortunately changes during usage.
The BIOS is easy to use and logical.
The samsung 1604 SATA HD and the Toshiba DVD ROM worked straight without any configuration. The Samsung HD is kinda laut during reading and writing in comparing to the sv0802n , although
its one of the most quiet SATA HDs.
The intel driver installtion went full automatic and without problems. Otherwise we installed all current drivers and updates , lke DX9c ect.
Conclusion
The High End Intel System is to modify easy and cheap into a silent computer. But who expects a no noise system probably has to think of a heatpipe cooling case. After the modification only the HD was still loud. An alternative
would be a Samsung SV0802N , but its a standart ATA Drive with less performance.
Thanks / finalwords / Next steps:
We thank the Team of Intel for the testsample. We look forward for a positiv cooperation with many intresting and and noiseless projects. Shortly we are about to test this system in a
completely fanless heatipe case the silentmaxx P1.
A special thank goes to MSI or the Graphiccard.
We also thank the company frozen silicon , Cooler Master and Silentmaxx for the CPU cooler , the PSU , and the HD Box. The
Artic cooling frezzer is available in 3 variations at frozen silicon and we will test those coolers detailed in our cooler area.

Anmerkungen |
Die Temperaturwerte sind fast identisch mit dem Testaufbau 2 |
Opinion of the Testsystem:
The Mercury Airliner Case created a good air flow , however it is noticable that no fanless components are working here. CPU and Graphic Fan , plus the Harddrive is still easy to hear , although the system is way more quiet then it
was before. Because of that we decided to put the whole system in a quiet ST-11 case. With the controlled 120mm ground fan and the 120mm PSU fan should be a a optimal case air circulation created.
Opinion of the the Testsystem:
The ST-11 Case pushed the noise in a more lower level. The temperatures are nearly identical with the Mercury Airliner Case , because the very quiet 120mm Papst fan is running at the bottom. The
Airdesign case lets more air in the case , but it also creates more noise. So the airdesign case sould be only a choice if it is possible to cool all of the components passiv.
Although the MSI Graphic card is already not noisy , we are still about to try to cool it passive. For the new RX PCI-E Graphic cards so far no extra heatsink is available , so we had to experiement a bit.
First we wanted to use the Aerocool VM-101 , which would fit good but made problems with with CPU cooler. Then we tried the old Thermaltake Giant II , which had only one heatpipe but finally it didn´t fit also. The same case with the
Zalman. And now ? One more the VM-101 and ths time we turend the the CPU Cooler so the fan blowed to the backside of the case , and then it worked.
Final Silent PC:
The solution i our case was the different mount of the cpu cooler. The socket 775 alows the mounting in every direction. The airflow actually passes the graphic card , but its still enough to cool it and we
will also create an additional detailed test of the VGA Adaptors temperatures in our Graphic area. The green arrow show the air flow beginning fromt the 120mm groud fan over the graphic card and out of the case via the PSU fan.
Now it is enough space inthe Case and everything is in order and very silent.
