MSI 865PE Neo2 Platinum (Prescott)
Forword:
most Mainboard manufactors offer products with a high performance and stability , but only a few of them integrating a solution to make the system quiet. The Previous version Neo 2 had superb performance but still a northbrigde fan. The new version has a onboard hardware to monitor the performance in relation to the temperatur , the CoreCell controller. We are testing here if high end and lownoise can harmonize.

The MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS supports Intels new CPU generation “Prescott” with FMB 1.5. Core clocks up to 3,6 Ghz and faster are possible. In addtion to that , MSI inegrated the own Memory Accelerating Technology (MAT) for a better performance over the chipset specs. A list of 73 compatible memory DDR 400 modules can be found on the MSI website.
The new Intel-CPU based 865PE Neo2 Platinum Edition unites all the technologie features of the 865PS intel chipset.Therefor MSI partner Intel recommends the board , because of the Dual-Channel DDR-memory-supporting, 800 MHz FSB and the
Hyper-Threading-Technology. Together with the MSI-Performance-Feature D.O.T. the platinum edition is speaking of performance something special. the optimized Meta I/O bracket containes all required Digital 6 Channel Audio plugs and the 4x
USB and LAN , so no wires inside the case disturbs.
The new invented Feature MSI CoreCenter is onboard. The CoreCell Chip-Technology unites CPU core , FSB and voltage settings and Temperatur / Fan monitoring changeable from the OS , a Power saving function (Power Pro) and optimzed overclocking functions inside the BIOS (speedster) during stable working (life pro)
On the performance side we have no doubts , but does the corecenter permits Low Noise at the same time ? we will see ...

Conclusion:
The microstar international 865 PE Neo2 Platinum is a very good board with a high performance and stability. The core cell onboard hardware monitoring is a perfect solution
for overclockers and lownoise friends. The easy to use bios update and core monitoring functions make this board absolutely userfriendly and deceives our award in this category

Best of Userfriendly:
MSI PE 865 Neo2 Platinum

Function and performance:
Thanks additional Hard-and Software the board is very userfriendly. It was so easy to update BIOS , Drivers and even GPU Bios out of Windows with a few mouseclicks. The risk and complicatet times are past where you needed a DOS Bood disk to update the system BIOS.
The performance is very upper level , and the BIOS offers many possibillitys for overclocking the system. The stbility was is always very good.
Temperatur- / Noise:
Although we build this system for Low Noise , the temperatur were pretty low. Without Case and PSU fan the CPU temperatures stayed always under 60° C. Especially the MSI FX 5900 Graphic board turned out in an acceptable noise level. We actually expeted a vacuum cleaner here.
Installation , test :
The installation of Hard- and Software didnt show any problems. USB mouse an keyboard worked straight and didnt need any drivers , in opposite to some other boards.
The BIOS is easy to work
with and offers many possiblillitys in relation of overclocking and hardware monitoring.
The core center is a very intresiting part , which offers easy overclocking out of the operating system (windows 2K in our case) , plus
temperatur monitoring of the CPU and System , where you can setup the fanspeed and max temperatures. With that you can set the system to low noise or with dynamic overclocking to powerful performance , easy with mouse in windows. BIOS
changings , save and reboot are past.
Low-noise friends will like this board , because of the onboard fan-temperatur monitoring and the passiv chipset cooler. The original intel boxed cooler ran a 2300 rpm , and raised its speed if
games or other application started which need cpu power. However a fullstop of the fan (like with the siemens board) didnt show up.
